1.
Thrill me with Your word Plant me in Your garden Surround me in Your courts Chart the road, chart the road I take Chart the road I take to meet You Make me righteous, make me pure Make me fruitful, make me Yours Make me Yours
2.
Every politician, every ruler Every failed government Every rich man, every ceo They are just as lost as you They don’t know what they’re doing at all If we follow them, our gaze will stay small Don’t you know there’s a king in Zion? Ruling over all Don’t you know there’s a king in Zion? He is where I’ll put my all We don’t know what we’re doing at all If you follow us, your gaze will stay small Make a run for Love, you won’t regret it Take refuge in it
3.
Surrounded by hardships and enemies, eating from my heart Roaring their mockery, “There will be no help for you from a god” You ground my feet, You lift my head, With all my might I shout to You Arise, O Lord Clothe us in Your blessings Arise, O Lord Salvation is Yours and yours alone Death comes marching on all sides, reaching for my bones But God will break the teeth of oppressors, what have I to fear? You are my rest Blanket me
4.
Surrounded by walls pushing us in You came and gave us room Crazed by illusion and full of frustration, We begged for You to come soon We are among the many asking “Who will show us some good?” You give us more joy in one ordinary day Than shopping sprees or substances could (Still we cry) “More, more,” we say. “More, more.” Though You’ve given more-than-enough, still we cry “More, more,” we say. “More, more.” Though You’ve given more-than-enough, We hunger for Your perfect Love You fill my heart like a wine I am drunk with Your grace Even when all seems just right, We still begged to see Your face We are among the many asking, “Who will show us some good?” You hear our hearts over our noise Asking if we’re understood Grace me Hear me Piece me together in your perfect peace Grace me Hear me Give me the rest to lie down and sleep
5.
Every morning, I lay out my life And wait for your fire to descend A garbage pile of selfishness Anger, hatred and sin You’re sitting on Your perfect throne Handing out a decree There’s a gathering of saints and sinners And you’ve made a way for me You’ve invited me Say you delight in me It’s incredible that You welcome us with open arms We’ll run for cover to you Let the party last all night Let the party last all night You don’t socialize with the wicked Or have evil as kith or as kin Lies and boasts and death are not welcome And me, I’ve called them all friend, yet You’ve invited me Say you delight in me You’re incredible

about

The Psalms are an incredible collection of song lyrics found in the dead-center of the Protestant Bible, written by people in all different places within their faith. Yes, these songs contain praise, thankfulness and adoration. They also, however, contain doubt and fear and anger and hopelessness. Within the poetry, there is a true humanity to how these writers approach the beautiful mystery that we have named God. That mystery is one that can often be found missing within Christian music, leaving those of us with Godly questions feeling alone. Thankfully, the Psalms speak right to those questions, with empathy and honesty...and often hope.

As a worship leader, I've always wanted to get closer to that Psalmic-heart when singing with my friends. Closer to the both transcendent hope and heartbroken honesty that those ancient songs represent. This project is the start of a more intentional journey to discover that balance.

For the past year, I've been working diligently with recording maestro and co-composer Zach Stidham to release 5 original songs based on the first 5 Psalms, and this is what we landed on. Once I had written the songs, the goal was to find a sound that melds both the ancient and the modern, the divine and the human.

From here, we hope to continue writing and recording songs based around EVERY Psalm in the future, releasing them in 5 song EPs like this one.

We hope you enjoy the music, and that it helps you see the Psalms as an encouraging example of what wrestling with the Unknown really can look like.

THANK YOU: to everyone in the album credits for using your time and skills to help me see this thing through, especially the Stidhams for giving up their home and an insane amount of off-hour work; Eastgate Fellowship for allowing me the safe space to explore so much of this stuff in a public, community platform; to my friends for being loving and supportive and unabashedly accepting of me, including my inability to censor myself at times; and to my shamefully fantastic family, especially my sweet daughter and my patient wife.

about

Matt Greene Panama City Beach, Florida

I've been singing and playing guitar since I was 15 years old, leading music for my church's youth group. From there, I've been in multiple bands over the years. Punk, pop, indie, experimental, folk, alternative, I've played and enjoyed it all.
Now, my full-time job is as a worship leader for a truly fantastic community of Christian misfits in Panama City Beach called Eastgate Fellowship.
